State of Texas Recognizes Alvin ISD’s Financial Management Excellence

The Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) honored Alvin ISD this spring with the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award. That's great news for all those involved and shows that ASBO is confident in how well Alvin ISD is managing its finances.

Executive Director of ASBO, David J. Lewis, said that this reward reflects the commitment Alvin ISD has to financial transparency and high-quality reporting. 

The long-standing financial health of Alvin ISD has been a point of pride for the district and the community. The state of Texas, specifically the Texas Controller, affirmed this year that their success is not an accident, but something they have achieved through hard work over many years. This has included maintaining rigorous accountability standards including staff development training as well as implementing data-driven decision-making processes to ensure fiscal responsibility in all areas. 

Superintendent Alvin ISD Carol Nelson expressed her thanks for the recognition, as well as her gratitude for her staff’s level of stewardship and mindful budgeting. These qualities have inevitably led to the impact that they have been able to make in the classroom and throughout the community. She mentioned that the success of their budgeting is due to the feedback and the values of the teachers and parents in the community. Alvin ISD’s intentional approach to their budget has given their district the ability to offer cost of living adjustments to their teachers and staff since 2009. This has given them the resources to recruit and retain the best faculty and staff in the area, for their students. 

Alvin ISD Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Daniel Combs accredited producing this level of financial health and achieving this accolade to taking a collaborative approach to financial management, working closely with the Board of Trustees to identify: 

• Their budgetary priorities. 
• And their goals for the district. 

Alvin ISD has also been recognized by the ASBO for its budget efforts in being the recipients of a Meritorious Budget Award, every year since 2013.
